We love glassybaby

We are going to veer off the O'verlays path for a moment to tell you about a product and company we just adore. While at Blog Fest we met an inspiring woman named Lee Rhodes who is the founder of the company "glassybaby". Lee is a three time cancer survivor who went through the struggles that many cancer patients endure when money is tight and paying for basic day costs is difficult. Glassybaby's mission is to fill that gap for those in need. More than $910,000 from sales has been donated to charities dedicated to healing and helping patients with these costs. She is truly an inspiring role model for small business owners like us, and a perfect example that doing good breeds more good.

The idea for her business came about when Lee was fighting her third battle with cancer and raising three small children in 1998. Upon dropping a tea light into a handmade and colorful glass cup, she was inspired by the healing light that illuminated before her eyes. This soothing light gave Lee the serentiy she needed to heal. This experience gave her the idea to hire several glass artists to create colorful glass votives. Glassybaby votives are handmade by Seattle artists in more than 400 colors. Each color represents an emotion, sense, or experience like hope, joy, frog hunting, wet dog and happiness.

Lee generously gifted the attendees at Blog Fest with their own glassybaby.
We're loving the votive along with the beauty and joy it brings knowing what a great cause it supports and the inspiring founder behind it all. Check out the glassybaby collection here!

This is a video of Lee sharing her story.  It shares the heart of glassybaby:

Here is a video that shows thousands of people at our annual Seconds Sale. It shows how people feel deeply connected to glassybaby as well as the founder's story of survival:

Lee was the first woman to be named Entrepreneur 2011 from Entrepreneur magazine. It is incredible what she has done in such a small amount of time with the obsticles she has overcome to achieve so much. Having been battling cancer, raising three kids, and starting a successful and charitible business is beyond admirable and worthy of recognition. Support Lee and her wonderful cause by bringing a glassbaby into your home or someone elses, they are sure to be enjoyed by all.

Window Makeover...

Check out the latest window transformation with O'verlays.  This was done through our custom department...
David & Tanya S. had a window that they wanted to transform, problem was the existing grids were sandwiched between the glass!
(before...)
We worked with them, getting the placement of the existing grids EXACT and then added the "Grace" pattern into the mix....
They painted it to match their window trim and VOILA!!!!

New life for an old window...

If you have an amazing transformation please send it to us, we love to see our O'verlays in their new spaces!

BEFORE AND AFTER CABINETS

I love when you guys send us your before and afters, and this one is great!

Samantha H. From Utah contacted us looking to have some custom panels made
 for her office cabinet doors:
(So envious of her fantastic built-ins and all that storage!!!)
We played around with a few designs and decided on "Grace".
We plumped her up a bit to give the doors some oomph, and viola!....

Her built-ins look even more amazing!
Thanks so much for sharing your project with us Samantha, we love your office!

If you have a before and after you'd like to share, or need a custom quote please email:

O'verlays on the Window

This is a custom design we did for a large plate glass window.

 Before, a big square.

The window happened to be perfectly square, so we made 4 panels that would connect to each other to create the "framed" pattern...
The panels were held in place with clear silicone adhesive.
The silicone works great because it remains flexible and you can easily remove the O'verlay if you ever wanted to. (Think super spring window cleaning.) The silicone can be scraped or peeled off the glass or O'verlay.
They went up in less than 20 minutes,
and scotch tape was used to keep them in place until they completely dried.

Here is a glimpse from the outside.
You can see the dabs of silicone used.  Not a big deal if it was on a higher level or not as trafficked an area.  To hide them a second set of panels will be added to the outside glass to mimic true divided light windows.  Since they are going outside we recommend painting with White Krylon Fusion first.

Unfortunately weather wasn't permitting for that,
but spring and warmer days are right around the corner.

Greek Key Stairs & 20% off

We found a new use for the 4" Greek Key Strips.
Stair risers!
(We also added some solid "Annes"every other step.
We are playing around with that pattern. If you are interested let us know.)

The 4" Greek Key joins its sister 4" Lolita, shown here dressing up some molding.

We have several more 4" patterns on the way including Gigi, Harper, Caci, Cheryle, Grace and a soon to be released Quatrefoil. Stay tuned!

4" Greek Key is now available on our website.
$4 per linear foot, can come in lengths up to 95".

And don't forget to grab a 20% off coupon code from Home with Lisa Quinn here.
You can also catch her latest episode there.
She featured O'verlays and did an amazing Master Bedroom transformation.
Thanks again Lisa!!!

The Look for Less

While flipping through a recent Ballard catalog I saw their Sacha mirror...

I loved the tiled effect it gave the wall, but not the fact that is was $369 for a 39" square.
(There are 4 panels shown above, so ka-ching!)
I had a light bulb moment.

It looked an awful lot like our Grace 20" square O'verlay...

Could I recreate this look?
I Googled "small mirrors" and found a box of (30) 3" round  at Craft Supplies for Less for $12 a box.  I needed 25, so perfect.  I also found some 2" square mirrors* that fit our 20" Harper O'verlay so I decided to get some of those too.

*the Harper has 49 squares, and they sell boxes of 48- bummer- so I left the center square empty on mine.
Also, the circles fit perfectly while I did notice some size variations with the 2" square mirror pieces.
They still worked and you can barely notice.

So here is how you make these:

1) I spray painted the O'verlay gold, didn't bother priming since they were going to be hanging on the wall and "low traffic"...

(You don't have to paint them.  Keep them white for a cleaner more modern look.)
I was going for a more distressed metal finish, so I took some random metallic paints I had on hand in shades from bronze to copper to gold- you can really do anything here, the goal is just to "dirty it up" and give it depth.
With a sea sponge I mixed up a few colors and dabbed it over the O'verlay...
I then took a dry brush and feathered it out a bit to soften the sponge marks...
Once dry I flipped it over and ran some Elmer's Stix All along the backsides of the circles one row at a time...
Now carefully place the mirrors face down into the adhesive and press in place.
Let dry according to the adhesive instructions.
I wanted these to set away from the wall a bit so I stuck thick felt chair pads on the outside and center circles.  If you want to attach a picture hanging hook with epoxy, now is the time to do so.  I would recommend using 2 at the top.
I am impatient, so I just used 2 small gold nails to hang mine
(you can faintly see them in the second row down)...

And here it is with the Harper.

Total Cost $37 + adhesive and paint of your choice.

you would need 4 of these to make a 40 x40" panel similar in size to Ballards
Still way cheaper... $148 to their $369.

What do you think?
